You can add emphasis to selected cells in an Excel 2007 worksheet by changing the fill color or applying a pattern or gradient effect to the cells. If you’re using a black-and-white printer, restrict your color choices to light gray in the color palette and use a simple pattern for cells that contain text so that the text remains legible. Microsoft Office for Mac is a suite of applications that includes Word for creating text documents and Excel for making spreadsheets. If you don’t want to use the default font in Office each.

For some workbooks/worksheets (not all!) the document prints in grey (is this grey scale?) and not in black. When I enable the setting 'Black and White' under Page Setup/Sheet, the page will print in black but I lose my colour column heading.
Other Excel documents print in black, without 'Black and White' enabled by the way. This is not a printer issue - all other apps print correctly. This problem only happens in Excel and only for some documents. Also, this happens with old and newly created documents. I would appreciate any assistance. This problem has been plaguing me for awhile. Look for the color Button on Excel either on Format bar or Standard Bar On mine its located on Format Bar although you can custom to them to either.
Shown here with the Paint bucket colors the background. And the highlight color under the A is button to color the Font. On the files with the Grey letters do the following Locate the select All Button. On the workbook/spreadsheet. Click on it then click on downward pointing arrow (called a Flippy)next to the A with the red line.
A Box will appear that will allow you to change color. Click on Button that says No color or Automatic.
Should change all Text Numbers and etc to Black. Save the file. Oh the paint buck acts like using a highlighter marker on typing paper. Thank you so much Philip for the very quick and thorough response. I was very hopeful that your suggestion would work - it sure sounded logical. However, I am sorry to say that it didn't change anything on my end. I did as you suggested and if I enabled the 'Black and White' setting under Page Setup, the printed result was still all grey and I lost the blue shading in the first row. If I did the same, only after following your instructions, I added the blue 'Fill Color' to the first row, I get the blue row but still all text is grey and not black. It seems that if I enable the Black and White setting, I lose the blue shading in the 1st row, no matter what.
I'd appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks again, C. Other than the possibility of the permissions need repairing. click Applications in the doc.
Now locate Utilities folder and open. Now locate Disk Utilities ( I've put this on the Dock so I would not have go these steps 1-3). Open Disk Utilities.
Run repair permissions. (Don't waste time verifying, in order to find anything to repair it must verify anyway). When finished try some of those files just to see if color changes. If this didn't help go to Font Book (located in application folder). open Font Book. Click on All fonts in far left window.
Click one font to select. Then hold down ⌘ key and type the A key (Select All). Then click file menu and select validate fonts Go to this web site and go to link on FontBook Lion and up. Follow exact direction there: Remove the oldest fonts completely. Now make a back up of those fonts in case you need to swap them for the ones you left with same name. Make zip archive of them and move them to a new location on hard drive or backup hard drive. Then delete originals you originally put in trash. Now try again. If that doesn't help I have run out of ideas.

A few meaningful things to check:. In File Page Setup - Page confirm that Print Quality is set to High. In File Page Setup - Sheet confirm that Black & white is not checked. Some printers try to 'formulate' black ink for anything designated as black by combining other colors (rather than using the black ink cartridge) which can result in a murky effect.
In File Page Setup - Sheet confirm that Draft quality is not checked. In Format Cells - Font make sure that Normal font is not checked.
Confirm that Office 2011 is fully updated 14.4.8 as of this writing. Despite your conviction:-) it wouldn't hurt to check the mfr's web site to see whether there is a driver &/or firmware update for your model of printer.
Each program uses a different set of parameters, so just because only 1 program's documents don't print correctly doesn't dictate that the print subsystem isn't at fault. Such quick and thorough responses! Unfortunately, Bob, I tried all of your suggestions (except the last), in fact, most of them I'd already employed. I didn't know about the 'Normal Font' setting and tried that too. As for the print driver, as far as I can tell, Canon doesn't release/update drivers for my OS version, which is 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).
I've been trying several variations and a couple of things I've discovered that may shed some light or perhaps just provide me with a kludgy solution: 1. A previously grey wksht in a muliti-sht workbook, suddenly started printing in black ink yesterday. Unfortunately, I didn't keep track of exactly what I did.
But it does tell me that the grey has something to do with settings (or inheritance from another sheet - although, I've tried and can't duplicate this) and can be changed to black. I just created a new wkbk, without changing any settings and the text printed in black. I'm sure I've done this before though and had a grey result. So I'm not convinced that I can conclude for sure that all new wkbks will print in black. From a different wkbk (than above) I copied some of the text from the first grey wksht and created a 2nd wksht, in the same wkbk, and the text stays grey. However, when I copy this same text into a new wkbk, without changing any settings, the text prints black. This suggests something, but I don't know what.
As always, I'd appreciate any wisdom or insight into this problem. I honestly don't know what else to suggest. Other than cell formatting & the items I listed, Excel has no influence over printed output. I've never come across this before & it's impossible to troubleshoot if not able to reproduce - especially since you're reporting variations within the same workbook file.
If you can share a problem file on OneDrive, Dropbox, etc. I'll take a look to see if I have the same issue. BTW: Did you ever check the Canon site?
Print drivers typically are not OS version specific unless they require a certain version or higher. Since Apple hasn't released any OS X 10.6 updates since 10.6.8 it's quite possible that yours may not be current.
